Xiaomi's proprietary user interface just got a significant update with the global unveiling of MIUI 12 via their online livestream last evening (19 May 2020). Starting from June 2020, Xiaomi smartphones (list of models here) will receive MIUI 12 updates over-the-air. Here's a summary of the new and improved features for the Android-based operating system interface.

General interface design language of MIUI 12.

Xiaomi redesigned the MIUI 12's interface to the tune of nature-inspired movement, having created system-wide animations to create a smoother scrolling and browsing experience. Details, such as closing an app or switching between apps, are designed to deliver a 'lifelike' experience for MIUI 12 users.

Permission options in MIUI 12.

An important new feature to the updated MIUI system is the broader range of privacy and security options built into the interface. MIUI 12 allows the user to grant specific permissions for apps, with options such as "while using the app" and "notify". These privacy options are built on top of Android's default permission controls over location sharing; by default, MIUI 12 also offers "while using the app" permissions for app access to the camera, microphone, contact list, call history, and phone storage. Additionally, users can strip location information and metadata of photos before they are to others.

App Drawer officially arrives on MIUI 12.

The MIUI 12 also officially debuts its App Drawer functionality. Previously, App Drawer was only available to Xiaomi's Poco launcher (the custom-made interface for their entry-level Poco smartphones). Xiaomi said the feature was well-received on Poco, so they've decided to bring it to the MIUI interface. Like most App Drawers, turning this feature on will have all the user's phone apps parked neatly within. Users can also group apps automatically based on categories.

Casting now comes with a Private Casting option that hides notifications when you're busy with a presentation.

Several MIUI existing features come with extra tools. For example, casting content onto other display using MIUI 12 now comes with an added privacy feature that doesn't expose incoming calls or messages onto the external screen. The upgraded Dark Mode is now compatible with all third-party apps (instead of selected apps back in MIUI 11). Multi-tasking also got some enhancements in the form of 'global floating windows' that can persist and be easily moved, closed, or resized with gestures. Finally, MIUI 12's version of Ultra Battery Saver Mode still allows for basic phone functionality, leaving calls, messages, and network connectivity undisturbed while reducing power-consuming activity.

The first devices to receive the global version of MIUI 12 include the Xiaomi Mi 9, Mi 9T, Mi 9T Pro, Redmi K20, and Redmi K20 Pro in June 2020. Other Xiaomi phone models will receive MIUI 12 after the initial batch, but don't forget to cross-check the availability against the list of supported Xiaomi phones here.
