It’s been three years since Facebook acquired WhatsApp, but the former still hasn’t quite figured out how to monetize the latter’s exceedingly large user base. Rather than wait for its principle company to receive an epiphany, WhatsApp has decided that it will be entering the digital payments spaces, and they intend to start with India and its 200 million users.

According to Engadget, the initiative would be WhatsApp’s first entry into the online payment space. That being said, doing this may be able to give the messaging service an advantage over the Alibaba-backed PayTM that is currently being used in the Indian market.

"India is an important country for WhatsApp," the company wrote in a statement to the tech site, TechCrunch, "and we're understanding how we can contribute more to the vision of Digital India. We're exploring how we might work with companies that share this vision and continuing to listen closely to feedback from our users."
