Uber and Destination Perak, the tourism agency of the state, have collaborated to launch UberTRIP, a time-based ride-on-demand service in Ipoh.

Being the first city to utilize the new feature, UberTRIP will allow users to visit multiple destinations with a special rate during a single four-hour ride. Participating drivers will also undergo travel guide training from Destination Perak to familiarize themselves with destinations and routes to show visitors around.

“There’s no better time to introduce UberTRIP in Malaysia than here in Ipoh. Malaysia’s tourism industry has grown four percent year-on-year and we have observed tourists from 43 different countries use Uber here in Ipoh alone.  By launching UberTRIP, we are bringing Ipoh’s residents and visitors more choices all at the touch of a button. We are delighted to be a part of this heritage city’s tourism ecosystem,” said Karina Ali Noor, General Manager for Expansion, Uber Malaysia.

Users who wish to request an UberTRIP will have to pay a minimum fare of RM140 to get up to four hours of travel time and RM0.60 per minute after. There are several payment options for users too, including cash, debit, and credit cards.

“The state of Perak has seen a steady increase and the highest domestic tourist arrivals for three consecutive years: 7.02 million in 2014, 7.96 million in 2015, and 16.8 million in 2016. Ipoh is undoubtedly the most visited city in Perak, and we support the timeliness of introducing an innovative product that can help tourists move around better, using modern technology. We welcome this move by Uber to introduce UberTRIP in Ipoh. This is very much in support of Destination Perak’s vision of drawing more tourists to visit the wonderful state of Perak,” said Abd Raheem Mohamad, Managing Director, CEO of Destination Perak.

In conjunction with the launch, Destination Perak has suggested three routes for UberTRIP users to choose from:

  • Ipoh Heritage Trip – Visit Ipoh’s historical sites and eat tasty delicacies
  • Ipoh to Gopeng – Travel to Malaysia’s most important mining town in Gopeng
  • Ipoh to Kuala Kangsar – Visit and check out the royal town of Perak
