TrueDepth camera in iPhone X is 2.5 years ahead of the competition

The TrueDepth camera might be the main cause of production delays for the iPhone X, but the highly sophisticated technologies will help Apple maintain a strategic edge over the competition for some time.

In his latest investor note, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes it will take up to two and a half years for the competition to replicate the functionality and user experience offered by the TrueDepth camera of the iPhone X. While the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note8 devices have facial recognition capabilities, their 2D tracking is considered inferior to Apple's implementation.

Even though Apple is estimated to only catch up with demand for the iPhone X in the first half of 2018, Kuo has 'full confidence' in its growth prospects for the next two years. However, he revised his earlier estimates of iPhone X shipments from 40 million to 30-35 million units for 2017.
