Suunto brings Spartan and Traverse Alpha multisport GPS watches to Malaysia

Gennady Jilinski, the General Manager of Suunto, was in town today to walk us through the new features on the Spartan and Traverse Alpha multisport GPS watches.

Suunto, the Finnish company known for its diving computers and rugged sports watches, announced earlier today that its collection of Spartan and Traverse Alpha multisport GPS watches will be available in Malaysia by the end of this month.

In total, there are four watches under the Spartan collection: the Spartan Sport, Spartan Ultra, Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro, and Spartan Trainer Wrist HR. The last two watches on the list were the most recent additions to the collection.

The Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro.

The highlight of the Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro is its FusedAlti technology, which uses GPS and barometric data to deliver a more precise reading of your current altitude. The Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro is also loaded with a GPS/GLONASS module for tracking your activities, and a wrist-based heart rate monitor from U.S.-based biometric technology company, Valencell.

Interestingly, the Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro will even alert you of an incoming storm whenever it detects a sudden drop in air pressure. You won’t have to guess when exactly the sun is going to rise and set, because the Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro will show it to you on its circular, color touch-sensitive display, alongside various other fitness metrics, including your total number of steps and calories burnt.

The Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro is water-resistant at depths of up to 100 meters, and is able to support more than 80 different types of sports activities, with the main ones being running, cycling, and swimming.

With its GPS working in full-force around the clock, the Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro will have a battery life of up to 10 hours. Switch it to power-saving mode, and the duration will increase all the way up to 40 hours.

The Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro will be retailing for RM2,699.

The Suunto Spartan Trainer Wrist HR.

Next, we have the Spartan Trainer Wrist HR, which is considerably more petite than the Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro, but nonetheless still loaded with plenty of fitness tracking features. It weighs only 56g, and comes with all the necessary creature comforts, including a wrist-based heart rate monitor, a GPS module, and 80 different sport modes.

Those of you who are particularly adventurous will appreciate the GPS navigation capabilities of the Spartan Trainer Wrist HR, as it features a breadcrumb view to ensure that you will be able to find your way back home should you decide to stray off the beaten path.

The Spartan Trainer Wrist HR is water-resistant for up to 50 meters, and has a 30-hour battery life provided that you leave it in power-saving mode. Use it primarily to tell the time, and it will be able to last for up to 14 days before needing a recharge.

As for its price, the two Spartan Trainer Wrist HR variants with a steel bezel will be retailing for RM1,499, while the ones with glass fiber-reinforced polyamide bezels can be yours for a slightly more affordable RM1,299.

From L-R: The Suunto Traverse Alpha Woodland, and Traverse Alpha Concrete.

And for those of you who are really adventurous, perhaps you might want to consider the two new additions to the Traverse Alpha collection, which are loaded with features developed specifically for fishing, hunting, and hiking.

Apart from the colors of their respective camouflage-themed straps, the specifications of the Traverse Alpha Woodland and Traverse Alpha Concrete are essentially one and the same.

They both have a stainless steel bezel, a GPS/GLONASS module, a red backlight that won’t render you temporarily blind when used at night, a water-resistance of 100 meters, the FusedAlti technology of the Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro, a moon phase calendar, sunrise/sunset times and alerts, as well as a very intriguing feature called automatic shot detection.

If you have a hunting rifle or a shotgun, the Traverse Alpha will automatically create point of interest whenever its built-in accelerometer detects that you’ve fired a shot, allowing to keep track of the location on Suunto’s online mapping platform, Movescount.

So, all ready to go hunting? You can bring the Traverse Alpha Woodland or Traverse Alpha Concrete along with you when it arrives later this month for RM2,799.

The aforementioned Suunto Spartan and Traverse Alpha watches can be purchased from Universal Fitness & Leisure Sdn Bhd – the exclusive distributor of Suunto products in Malaysia.
