Surface 2 On Sale from March 14 Onwards

Sunny Ooi, Director, Consumer Channels Group, Microsoft Malaysia, and Rukmani Subramaniam, incoming Chief Marketing and Operations Officer, Microsoft Malaysia, unveiling the new Surface 2 tablet.

Microsoft officially launched the Surface 2 at GSC Signature @ The Gardens today, coinciding with the ongoing Surface 2 roadshow that is happening from March 10 to March 16 at the East Atrium of Mid Valley Megamall. As previously mentioned in our hands-on article, the Surface 2 will be offered in 32GB and 64GB variants for an RRP of RM1,399 and RM1,699, respectively.

Rukmani Subramaniam addressed the crowd.

During launch, Microsoft Malaysia took the opportunity to introduce its incoming Chief Marketing and Operations Officer, Rukmani Subramaniam, who opened her speech by talking about her day-to-day experience with the Surface 2, covering notable features like the improved kickstand design, backlit keyboard on the Touch and Type Covers, as well as the availability of fun and educational apps on Windows Store for the little ones, just to name a few.

"We're incredibly thrilled with the enthusiastic response that Malaysians have towards our Surface line of tablets thus far. The launch of the Surface 2 continues this momentum in bringing in a new category of devices that have transformed the way Malaysians work and play," added Rukmani Subramaniam.

In fact, there are now more than 140,000 apps in Windows Store, the recent additions being AirAsia, Discovery News, Facebook, Flipboard for Windows, along with games like Asphalt 8: Airborne, Avengers Initiative, Despicable Me: Minion Rush, Frozen Free Fall, LEGO Hero Factory Brain Attack, and UNO & Friends.

Sunny Ooi put the dual-angle kickstand to the test. The added 40-degree incline is easier on the lap, especially with the Touch or Type Cover attached.

"Surface 2 builds on the strengths of the Surface value proposition that enables portability and productivity in one sleek device, and is the most productive tablet for personal use in the market today," commented Sunny Ooi.

New hardware also means new accessories to keep you productive on the go. Retailing at RM379, the new Touch Cover 2 is made thinner and lighter than its predecessor. Despite the addition of backlit keys, the Touch Cover 2 measures only 2.75mm thin, with exponentially more built-in sensors (80 to 1,100) to allow touch gestures across the keys and touchpad. Best of all, it's also spill-resistant and easy to clean.

Customers who purchase the new Surface 2 will receive free 1-year Skype calls to landlines (in more than 60 countries), unlimited Skype Wi-Fi for one year, and free 200GB OneDrive storage for two years.

The Type Cover 2, on the other hand, maintains the same lightweight design of its predecessor, and made more rigid for a quieter typing experience. It also comes with backlit keys and will be available in cyan, magenta, purple and, black for an RRP of RM409. Users who prefer a form-fitting mouse should look into the new Surface Edition Arc Touch Mouse, which connects via Bluetooth and is sold for an RRP of RM219.

Come March 14, the new Surface 2 will be available at all authorized Microsoft retailers and reseller partners. If you're interested to experience the Surface 2 in person, be sure to visit Mid Valley Megamall this weekend, or check out the upcoming roadshows at Sunway Pyramid (March 19-23) and Plaza Low Yat (April 7-13).
