Seagate releases 6TB surveillance drive with recovery service

Seagate Technology recently released new high-capacity hard drives that are specifically engineered for surveillance and video analytics applications at ASIS 2014. These drives can support up to 32 channels of input and handle higher read and write workloads than normal HDDs.

What makes Seagate’s surveillance HDD special is that it is bundled with the Seagate Rescue service. The service is touted as capable of restoring data within two weeks, depending on the type of recovery at a success rate of above 90 percent.

“Data is invaluable to the user to either meet industry regulations or leverage for content analysis or security, so when data loss occurs it’s an expense to the customer. Seagate’s Surveillance HDD with Rescue services addresses this issue head on and alleviates these concerns.”said Seagate's Vice President of Marketing, Scott Horn.

This is Seagate’s seventh-generation HDD to be optimized for surveillance. This time, the drive comes in capacities of up to 6TB and can store up to 600 hours of high-definition content, making it the industry’s highest-capacity drive designed specifically for surveillance applications.

Designed to scale video storage, the drive is able to perform in systems with up to 16 drives, thanks to its rotational vibration sensors. It also boasts low power consumption and heat emissions, and a one-million-hour MTBF (mean time between failure), which translates to durability.
