Samsung won't be launching its own smart speaker anytime soon

Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal claimed that Samsung is working on a voice-activated speaker powered by its digital assistant Bixby. While no specific launch date is mentioned in the report, it is unlikely to see one being launched this year.

An anonymous source told The Korea Herald that Samsung might not launch the smart speaker anytime soon due to "marketable issues" even though the company has been working on the device for more than a year.

“Samsung currently does not view Al speakers as marketable, as the global market is already dominated by unbeatable Amazon and the Korean market is too small to make profits,” an anonymous source told The Korea Herald.

The source added that Samsung's focus at the moment is to devote all available resources to develop the English version of Bixby. Nonetheless, Samsung is still testing out the technology for some of its devices such as smart refrigerators.

“Samsung may take a wait-and-see attitude rather than hurriedly jumping into the uncertain market with a new device, whose functions are no different from existing devices by rivals,” said Kim Jong-ki, a researcher specializing in the mobile industry at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade.

With Apple entering the fray later this year with its HomePod smart speakers, it seems odd that Samsung is not jumping on the bandwagon this year.
