In a surprising move, Samsung has announced that beginning this spring its 2019 smart TVs (and 2018 models after a firmware update) will come with an iTunes Movies and TV Shows app and support AirPlay 2. But the features may not come to all countries: while AirPlay 2 support will be available on Samsung smart TVs in 190 countries worldwide, the iTunes Movies and TV Shows app will only come to TVs in over 100 countries.

The implication of having the iTunes Movies and TV Shows app on the TVs is that you don’t need a device such as an Apple TV box to access your existing iTunes library. Through this TV app you can also browse the iTunes Store to buy or rent movies (including 4K HDR titles, of course) and TV shows. The app will also integrate with Samsung’s smart TV services, such as Universal Guide, the new Bixby, and Search.

Also, the support for AirPlay 2 means that Apple devices can now select a Samsung TV as a wireless target to directly stream videos, photos, music, podcasts, and more to. Since AirPlay 2 supports multi-room audio, it should also be possible to stream audio to multiple Samsung TVs in different rooms at the same time.

Update: Apple has updated its AirPlay page, and is touting "AirPlay 2-enabled TVs", which suggests the wireless protocol may be coming to other brands' TVs as well.
