Samsung has just announced two new consumer SSDs at its annual SSD Global Summit in Seoul. These two new SSDs - the SSD 960 Pro and SSD 950 Evo - are targeted squarely at consumers and will offer dramatically improved performance.

The SSD 960 Pro is Samsung’s new flagship consumer SSD, and it is actually based heavily on the SM961 SSD that Samsung has been shipping to OEMs for some time.

The new SSD 960 Pro uses Samsung’s latest Polaris SSD controller, which features 5 cores, making it significantly more powerful than the UBX controller used in last year’s SSD 950 Pro. In addition, the SSD 960 Pro also uses Samsung’s latest third generation 48-layer MLC V-NAND.

The SSD 960 Pro will also feature Samsung's new Dynamic Thermal Guard technology, which helps manage temperature during heavy load to maintain performance consistency.

Like its predecessor, the SSD 960 Pro will be offered in the M.2 package and will support the PCIe 3.0 x4 interface as well as the latest NVMe protocol.

The results are suitably impressive. Samsung is claiming sequential read and write speeds up to a whopping 3,500MB/s and 2,100MB/s respectively. Random read and write IOPS will also peak at an incredible 440,000 and 360,000 respectively. These figures represent performance gains of up to a staggering 40 percent.

Finally, users will be able to manage the SSD 960 Pro using Samsung's all-new Magician SSD management utility, which has been redesigned for easier operation. The Samsung Magician utility will let users easily manage and monitor their drives, as well as perform firmware updates.

The SSD 960 Pro will be available in 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities, and will come with suitably high endurance ratings. The 2TB variant, for example, is rated good for up to 1200TB of writes. All SSD 960 Pro drives will also come with 5-year warranties.

The SSD 960 Evo is the little sibling of the SSD 960 Pro and is targeted at more budget-conscious users. Like the SSD 960 Pro, the SSD 960 Evo is also based heavily on the PM961 SSD that Samsung has been shipping to OEMs.

Also like the Pro variant, the SSD 960 Evo is powered by Samsung’s latest Polaris controller and uses Samsung’s third generation 48-layer TLC V-NAND. It is also offered in the M.2. package and will support the PCIe 3.0 x4 interface as well as the latest NVMe protocol. This is also the first 'Evo' drive to support the PCIe 3.0 x4 interface as well as NVMe.

The SSD 960 Evo will also feature Samsung’s new caching technology called Samsung Intelligent TurboWrite. It helps accelerate performance, allowing the SSD 960 Evo to attain sequential read and write speeds of up to 3,200MB/s and 1,900MB/s respectively. Random read and write performance is claimed to be up to 380,000 and 360,000 IOPS respectively. These figures rival last year’s flagship SSD 950 Pro.

The SSD 960 Evo will also feature Samsung's new Dynamic Thermal Guard technology, and it is compatible with Samsung's all-new Magician utility, which lets users easily manage and monitor their drives as well as perform firmware updates.

The SSD 960 Evo will be offered in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities, and will have improved endurance ratings. The 1TB variant, for instance, is rated good for up to 400TB written. In comparison, the same 1TB capacity of the SSD 850 Evo is rated good for up to 150TB written. The SSD 960 Evo will come with 3-year long warranties.
