The current case for the AirPods can hold multiple additional charges for more than 24 hours of listening time, but Apple may have plans for it to double as a wireless charging dock for more devices in future.

According to Patently Apple, Apple filed for a patent application which describes a new generation AirPods case doubling as a wireless charging dock for the Apple Watch, MacBook, iPhone and iPad. Here's an excerpt from the patent application:

Such devices can include, for example, portable music players (e.g., MP3 devices and Apple’s iPod devices), portable video players (e.g., portable DVD players), cellular telephones (e.g., smart telephones such as Apple’s iPhone devices), video cameras, digital still cameras, projection systems (e.g., holographic projection systems), gaming systems, PDAs, as well as tablet (e.g., Apple’s iPad devices), laptop (e.g. MacBooks) or other mobile computers. Some of these devices can be configured to provide audio, video or other data or sensory output.”

There is also a mention on a waterproof design for the case, which could suggest that Apple has plans for waterproof AirPods sometime in the future. While the idea of having a compact wireless charging dock seems interesting, we wonder how much power the next generation case could hold.
