Nikon Celebrates Production of 70 Million NIKKOR Lenses

Nikon Corporation is proud to announced that its total production of NIKKOR photographic lenses for Nikon interchangeable lens cameras has broken the 70 million mark at the end of May 2012.

This is mainly attributed to the release of the Nikon 1 in 2011, advanced cameras with interchangeable lenses, which led to the production of the 1 NIKKOR line of dedicated lenses. Compact and lightweight for the small Nikon 1, these lenses feature the same optical technologies, superior quality and advanced technologies that Nikon has cultivated over the years. Designed for sharp rendering of both photos and movies, the lens also features a retractable lens mechanism which enables its compact size.

With total production of NIKKOR lenses reaching 65 million in October 2011, Nikon has also continued to actively develop new products under its brand of photographic lenses. This includes the release of four 1 NIKKOR lenses in a variety of colors for the Nikon 1 J1 and Nikon 1 V1, as well as new FX-format compatible NIKKOR lenses that help maximize the potential of high-performance cameras such as the Nikon D4, D800 and D800E.

Besides reaching the milestone of 70 million NIKKOR lenses produced, Nikon also charted a total production of 30 million AF-S lenses with its Silent Wave Monitor (SWM) mechanism. Adopted for more than 90% NIKKOR lenses, the SWM is an ultrasonic autofocus motor developed by Nikon, which converts 'traveling waves' into rotational energy, enabling smooth, quiet and comfortable autofocusing. Today, it is built into a total of 60 different lenses of all types, from ultra wide-angle to super telephoto DX- and FX- format lenses, zoom lenses and micro lenses.

NIKKOR has a history that can be traced as far back as 1933, when a large-format lens for aerial photography was released as the first lens under the brand. Today, it is a name synonymous with high-performance, high-quality SLR lenses, thanks to the incorporation of cutting-edge technologies like Nano Crystal Coat, which eliminates internal lens element reflections. Today, the NIKKOR brand has a rich lineup of more than 70 lenses.
