ASUS is rolling out its latest VivoBook S15 (S530) laptop at COMEX 2018. First announced at Computex earlier this year, the new VivoBook S15 is targeted at a more youthful crowd with its selection of bold colors and textured finishes.

It comes in Firmament Green, Star Grey, Silver Blue, Gun Metal, and Icicle Gold. Some of the colors have their own unique finishes, and the Firmament Green has a textured woven finish around the keyboard while the Icicle Gold has a brushed finish with diamond-inspired motifs.

In addition, it features ASUS’ ErgoLift hinge that automatically elevates the keyboard by 3.5 degrees when the lid is raised, which supposedly provides a more comfortable typing experience. This approach also exposes extra ventilation space under the chassis for improved cooling.

The bezels have been slimmed down on three sides as well, and the NanoEdge display should provide a slightly more immersive viewing experience. The VivoBook S15 boasts an 86 per cent screen-to-body ratio and a more compact footprint, a nice touch for a mid-range laptop.

Here’s an overview of its specifications:

  • 15.6-inch 1,920 x 1,080-pixel IPS display
  • Intel Core i7-8550U (1.80GHz, 8MB L3 cache)
  • 8GB DDR4-2400 RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce MX150 2GB
  • 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD
  • 42Wh battery
  • 361.4 x 243.5 x 18mm
  • 1.8kg

The VivoBook S15 comes equipped with discrete NVIDIA graphics for some extra graphics horsepower, but its 42Wh battery seems a little on the small side. However, ASUS says it’s using a different kind of battery from regular lithium-ion units. The lithium-prismatic battery in the VivoBook S15 can supposedly last up to 3x longer than their lithium-ion counterparts, and ASUS is claiming all-day battery life on the S15.

The laptop also supports fast charging technology, which reportedly gets you up to 60 per cent charge in under 50 minutes.

There’s a good selection of ports and connectors as well, with one USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type-A, one USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type-C, two USB 2.0, and one HDMI output. There’s also a microSD card reader on board, but I’d have preferred to see a full-sized SD card reader.

The VivoBook S15 (S530) is available to buy at COMEX 2018 at S$1,598
