Many new smartphones will sport 3D Touch-like display next year

How Apple implements 3D Touch on the display of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

The introduction of 3D Touch on the Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus has prompted other phone makers to adopt similar technologies next year.

According to research firm IHS, one quarter (25 percent) of all new smartphones coming next year will come with 3D Touch-like displays. Shipments of pressure-sensitive display modules are expected to increase 317 percent to 461 million units in 2016, and will appear in flagship and mid-range smartphones.

Currently, the iPhone 6s/6s Plus and Huawei Mate S are the only smartphones in the market to sport pressure-sensitive displays. Synaptics will play a huge role as it announced three new ClearPad discrete touch controller solutions in October, which will enable "increased functionality and entirely new dimensions of touch" for smartphones, tablets and automative apps.

Leading global OEMs will be shipping force-enabled smartphones in early 2016 with the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Xiaomi's future flagship devices as the likely first adopters. Like the current Star Wars saga, it seems that the Force has awakened.
