Integration of WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger will not happen this year

Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram will likely operate as separate apps for some time before being integrated as a single messaging platform

During Facebook’s Q4 earnings call yesterday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared that the integration is still in the early stages of the planning and there remains a lot for the company to figure out. He thinks it is unlikely to show up until 2020 and beyond.

"The integration that we're thinking about, we're really early in thinking through this," Zuckerberg said on the company's Q4 earnings call. "There's a lot more we need to figure out."

Zuckerberg also shared a key motivation behind the company's push for a unified messaging platform: end-to-end encryption. He wants secure messaging to be consistent across all platforms and convenience for consumers who do not need to jump between the three platforms. He also mentioned that the unified messaging platform should be similar to the iMessage-like layer for SMS which provides more functionality and security.
