IFA 2017: Dell announces updated Inspiron 2-in-1 convertible notebooks

The Dell XPS 13 may be getting Intel’s 8th-generation CPUs, but it isn’t the only one to do so. Dell is also adding the new processors to its Inspiron 7000 line of 2-in-1 convertibles and clamshell notebooks, and it made some design tweaks as well in the form of narrower side bezels.

The star of the series is the gargantuan Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1, a sprawling 17.3-inch convertible that Dell says was the first on the market when it was announced last year. That’s quite a lot of screen for a 2-in-1 device, and while it may be a bit unwieldy when used in tablet mode, it should do quite nicely as a viewing device for movies in tent mode.

The display of the Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1 uses a Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) IPS panel, and it is powered by either an 8th-generation Intel Core i5-8250U (1.6GHz, 6MB L3 cache) or Core i7-8550U (1.8GHz, 8MB L3 cache) quad-core processors. In addition, it can be equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce MX150 graphics card.

It also features two USB-C connectors, one of which doubles as the charging port. Dell is claiming up to 11 hours of battery life on the device.

The Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1 will be available in the U.S. on October 3, 2017 with prices starting from US$999.99 (~RM4,263)

On top of that, the company trotted out 13- and 15-inch Inspiron 7000 2-in-1 models that are quite similar to the larger 17.3-inch version. The key difference is the screen on the Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1, which can be configured with a high resolution 4K (3,840 x 2,160) display.

Early next year, Dell also plans to add options for Intel Optane memory, so you can get an extra performance boost without paying for an entire SSD. The devices can also be paired with Dell’s Active Pen – you'll have to buy this separately – for quick note taking or sketching.

The 13- and 15-inch Inspiron 7000 2-in-1 is slated to be available in the U.S. beginning October 3, 2017 for US$879.99 (~RM3,755) and US$849.99 (~RM3,627), respectively. Those of you who aren't too keen on convertible notebooks can opt for the regular 13- and 15-inch clamshell variant of the Inspiron 7000 instead, which will be priced from US$799.99 (~RM3,413).

The lower-end 13- and 15-inch Inspiron 5000 2-in-1 notebooks will likewise be getting Intel’s latest generation processors, and will be retailing for US$799 (~RM3,409) and US$749.99 (RM3,200), respectively.

All the aforementioned Inspiron convertibles and laptops can be configured to support Windows Hello facial recognition and equipped with speedy PCIe SSDs and up to 16GB of RAM.
