HTC's new U Ultra and U Play look mesmerizing

Just hours ago, HTC held an event in Taiwan to launch its latest series of phones, the U-series. Currently made up of two smartphones, the U Ultra and U Play not only look amazing, they have impressive features and specifications as well.

While both the U Ultra and U Play are very different devices, they do have some things in common, and that's the HTC Sense Companion, HTC USonic technology, and features HTC's new design language, which it calls 'liquid surface'.

The HTC Sense Companion is HTC's very own AI that delivers notifications based on real-time events, while the USonic technology involves analyzing your inner ears (when using in-ear earphones) to provide you with a customized audio profile. Lastly, the liquid surface design language is the use of glass and color pigments for a contoured liquid surface.

HTC U Ultra

Here are the specifications of the HTC U Ultra:

  • Processor: Snapdragon 821 SoC
  • Display: 5.7-inch Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440) with Dual Display
  • Dual Display: 2-inch (160 x 1,040)
  • Storage: 64GB / 128GB (expandable up to 2TB)
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Camera: (rear) 12MP HTC UltraPixel 2, laser autofocus, phase detection, optical stabilization, f/1.8, supports 4K video recording with 3D audio.
  • (front) 16MP with UltraPixel mode
  • Battery: 3,000mAh
  • OS: Android 7.0 Nougat with HTC Sense

The U Ultra has a second display that allows the Sense Companion to push notifications to you.

The HTC U Ultra is the bigger brother among the two. It comes with a 2-inch second display for the earlier mentioned Sense Companion to push notifications, and has four always-on microphones to support unlocking using only your voice. These microphones also allow the recording of 3D audio when shooting 4K videos.

HTC U Play

The HTC U Play, on the other hand, has these specs:

  • Processor: MediaTek Helio P10
  • Display: 5.2-inch Full HD
  • Storage: 64GB (expandable up to 2TB)
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Camera: (rear) 16MP, phase detection, optical stabilization, f/2.0, Full HD video recording
  • (front) 16MP with UltraPixel mode
  • Battery: 2,500mAh
  • OS: Android with HTC Sense

While the U Play looks every bit as gorgeous as the U Ultra, it's innards are not as impressive. It loses out on the second display and always-on microphones, among other things.
