A Hands-On Preview with the Alcatel One Touch Idol X

Earlier last week, Alcatel hosted a private hands-on session with the all-new Alcatel One Touch Idol X. Held at Ben's in Publika, the event gave a handful of media an exclusive preview of the all-new smartphone that would be launched this Wednesday on September 4.

Jason Khor, APAC Business Development Manager for TCL Mobile Malaysia briefing attendees on the various features and functions of the smartphone

Available in a wide range of colors including red, yellow, blue, green, pink and black, the One Touch Idol X stands out with its 5-inch full HD IPS display, which stretches out from edge to edge with almost no bezel. Boasting stunning clarity, it delivers true, crisp colors across an extremely wide 170 degree viewing angle. The MiraVision Image Engine enhances the quality of the display, improving sunlight readability with vivid colors, sharper images and better visibility in dark or outdoor environments. It also saves power, intelligently adjusting the brightness according to ambient light and content, saving up to 27% more battery for movies and 10% for gaming.

In terms of performance, the slim 6.9mm thin smartphone packs a quad core 1.5GHz CPU that is fast enough to run even the most resource-demanding games and apps. Powered by Android Jelly Bean 4.2, the One Touch Idol X is also capable of smooth, lag-free performance. In terms of build, the Idol X is equipped with an internal frame built from titanium alloy, which is often used in the making of spacecrafts and premium sports equipment. This gives it a lighter weight with better corrosion and extreme temperature resistance.

Camera lovers are also in for a treat, thanks to the device's built-in 13.1 megapixel camera with a blue glass lens that filters light-noise, which delivers incredibly sharp images with even the finest details captured. Capable of taking full HD video recordings for playback at 1920 x 1080 pixels, this smartphone also makes shooting videos a complete joy. Features like Emotishots also allow the camera to take up to 4 shots with the full HD 2 megapixel front camera; while a 5cm super macro lens can take sharp photos even at an extreme close-up.

Based on our hands-on, we found the One Touch Idol X to be extremely lightweight but sturdy. A one-piece device, it comes with two SIM card slots on the left and right side, so users can load two numbers into one smartphone, both of which will run concurrently. The power button is located on the top, next to a 3.5mm jack for headphones, while the bottom is where the micro USB port can be found.
