Garmin launches MP Step Challenge, most fit MP gets RM10,000

Aeco Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd, who represent Garmin in Malaysia, in collaboration with the Youth & Sports Ministry earlier today officially launched the Garmin MP Step Challenge. The campaign aims to promote a healthy lifestyle amongst members of parliament and an active lifestyle to the people in general.

Khairy Jamaluddin, Youth and Sports Minister, said that the challenge is open to all members of parliament on a voluntary basis.

“This challenge is open to both BN and opposition members. Although it may not change our political direction, we can still unite in the matters of health and sports for the good of the people,” said Khairy in his opening speech.

He added that the challenge has been broken up into two categories: ‘Team Universe’ for MPs aged 45 and above, and ‘Team Olympic’ for PMs aged below 45. The challenge period starts on September 11 and ends in October 2.

To compete in the event, each participating MP was given a Garmin Vivofit 2. The device will be be used to record and upload each participating MPs physical activity. At the end of the three week period, the MP with the highest average daily steps as recorded by the Garmin Vivofit 2 in each category will be awarded RM10,000 by Garmin to promote sports in his or her constituency in conjunction with National Sports day.

Those who placed second and third in each category will also receive RM7,500 and RM5,000 respectively from the Youth & Sports Ministry.

42 out of the 222 members of parliament are participating in the challenge.
