Asia Pacific University's League of Legends team wins RM30,000 in scholarships

The Collegiate Division of the Malaysia Campus League (MYCL) , held at the Asia Pacific University (APU), has just concluded, and Garena has just awarded the winning team, which coincidentally happens to be the home team - RM30,000 in partial scholarships.

In addition, the team from APU also took home RM2,500 in cash prize, as well as a spot representing Malaysia in two upcoming tournaments: the International eSports Festival in South Korea, and the League of Legends International Collegiate Championship in Thailand later this year.

On the scholarship and the MYCL, Jason Ng, Vice President of Garena, said, “By offering the very first eSports scholarship in Malaysia, we hope to foster a vibrant League of Legends campus ecosystem, while at the same time helping top players in schools pursue their passion in eSports. Regardless of whether they go on to play professionally, these players will be able to bring important skills of teamwork, problem-solving and creativity to other endeavours in Civil society.”

It's a very interesting development where eSports is concerned. If there are partial scholarships for eSports now, maybe it won't be long before universities and colleges offer eSports scholarships the same way they offer conventional sports scholarships.
