In addition to the all-new Mac Pro, Apple has also announced a new pro display called Pro Display XDR.

Here are the key specs:

  • 32-inch LCD with Retina 6K resolution (6,016 x 3,384 pixels!)
  • 10-bit color, P3 support
  • 1,600 nits peak brightness, 1,000 nits full-screen brightness
  • 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio
  • Single Thunderbolt 3 connection
  • Edge-to-edge glass cover, 9mm-thin bezels
  • Tilt and height adjustments and portrait mode with Pro Stand
  • VESA mount support

Judging from the specs alone, Apple is right to call the Pro Display XDR “groundbreaking”. The 6K resolution aside, I’m pretty stoked that this display can maintain a 1,000-nit brightness for the entire screen indefinitely. For pros working with HDR content all day long, this is incredible. (In fact, the XDR in the name stands for extreme dynamic range.) According to Apple, the magic sauce behind this is a direct backlighting system with “a large array of LEDs” and the lattice pattern at the back of the display that draws out heat.

Apple also says the Pro Display XDR uses the industry’s best polarizer technology, so it’ll deliver accurate colors even when you’re looking at it at an angle. It has an anti-reflective coating, and there’s a new matte option called nano-texture (basically: glass etched at the nanometer level) to bring down the reflectivity level and minimize glare.

Additionally, the Pro Display XDR works with an optional Pro Stand that has an arm fitted with counterbalances. Apple says this stand is designed to make the display “virtually weightless”, so users can easily place it into position. If you don't want a stand, Apple is also selling a VESA mount adapter.

The Apple Pro Display XDR with standard glass has a sticker price of US$4,999, while the model with nano-texture glass is going for US$5,999. The Pro Stand and VESA mount adapter are sold separately, and are priced at US$999 and US$199 respectively. All of them will be available to order in the fall.
