Another iPhone explodes in New York

As integral a part as they are in our lives, smartphones may just be the undoing of the less fortunate or less careful among us.

In February last year, we’ve had reports of an iPhone 5c exploding in the back pocket of a schoolgirl’s pants. Then came the case of an LG G3 going out with a literal bang and burning a hole into a mattress in December. Now, we have another iPhone 5c exploding in the pants pocket of a man, which caused him burns necessitating a stay in a hospital for over a week.

Erik Johnson was treated for second and third degree burns on his inner thigh as a result of his exploding phone, and says that must be what it feels like when a bull is branded.

Johnson was with his brother at a cousin’s wake with the phone in his pocket. He claims to have heard a pop when he bent down to retrieve his keys, and realizes his leg going on fire immediately after.

“I was literally jumping up and down trying to get the phone out of my pocket, but I think the phone melted my pockets shut so I couldn't get into it and I had to rip my pants off and throw the pants to the side,” said Johnson. “I just want my leg back to what it was, you know.”

In both cases of iPhone 5c, the phones went straight to ‘pop’, skipping the bend phase that the iPhone 6 Plus allegedly go through as they inhabit their owners’ pockets. While some would argue that it is the neglect of the users themselves that caused such unfortunate incidences, explosions are still way too harsh a punishment for such neglect.

This may also result in a lawsuit as Mike Della, a personal injury lawyer, plans to sue Apple on Johnson's behalf
