Alcatel-Lucent Unveils 'Geek-the-Genius' Contest

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia has launched a contest, named Geek-the-Genius, in a bid to foster the creation of more local online content, specifically Facebook edutainment applications for children aged between 5-12.

“According to the Google Ad Planner, 64.7 percent of Malaysians use the Internet and out of which 75.5 percent of them are active on Facebook. It is important to have programs such as this to drive the availability of relevant and compelling local content on Facebook suited for local consumption,” said MDeC's Chief Operating Officer, Ng Wan Peng, who also officiated the launch.

The contest (www.geekthegenius.com) is open to all eligible Malaysians from April 27 to July 20, 2012. Upon registration, participants may use the various tools and plugins provided by Facebook to develop the applications, where they will be showcased at www.facebook.com/geekthegenius*.

“As a provider of the building blocks and enabling technologies for broadband connectivity in the country, Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia hopes the Geek-to-Genius contest will contribute towards the development of a robust Internet ecosystem which is in line with the government's National Broadband Agenda,” explained Mohd Fazlin Shah Mohd Salleh, President and Managing Director of Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia.

Submissions by participants will be shortlisted and judged based on several criteria, including creativity level, idea originality, level of educational content, user experience, and suitability and relevance to the target audience.

The judging panel consists of the following members:

  • Ir Wan Murdani Wan Mohamad, Head of Digital Infrastructure Business Unit, MDeC
  • Ronald Byrne, Editor of StarBytz, The Star newspaper’s IT pullout
  • Sheikh Raffie Abdul Rahman, Business Development Advisor, BERNAMA Systems and Solutions Advisor
  • Reza Razali, Managing Director, Terato Tech
  • Ravi Gopal, Head of Education, Astro, Measat Broadcast Network System

A total of 13 cash prizes will be awarded. They include:

  • Grand Prize: RM20,000
  • First Prize: RM12,000
  • Second Prize: RM5,000
  • 10x Consolation Prizes: RM700 each

The prize presentation and showcase event are tentatively scheduled for September 3, 2012.
