First Looks: ExcelStor GStor Wave 160GB
Portable hard disks are a dime a dozen these days, so manufacturers have started offering more exotic features such as shock protection and backup software to entice buyers. The latest offering from ExcelStor, the GStor Wave 160GB, is no exception to this trend.
Encased in an aluminum fan-less chassis and looking faintly reminiscent of an alcoholic hip flask without the cap, the GStor Wave has a (mostly) non-glossy finish that's comfortably smooth to the touch. While we would have preferred a completely non-glossy surface, ExcelStor has lined the edges of the casing with a shiny mirror-like finish, so fingerprint smudges will happen, though we have to admit, the overall effect is quite attractive.
In order to keep with a slim and clean profile, the GStor Wave comes with only one USB 2.0 port, though it's not really that big of a deal, seeing as how most computers these days have USB ports as opposed to a FireWire port. The supplied USB Y-cable is also long enough for regular usage, so we have no complaints there.
Drive My Disk
A check of the hard disk model of the GStor Wave revealed that it was using a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 hard drive (of the 5400RPM variety), so we expected decent if not spectacular results from the GStor Wave when we did a quick benchmark of the drive via a simple read write test. Our results showed pretty much similar results to another portable hard disk that we recently reviewed. Both units took only 3 minutes to transfer 2GB's worth of files.
A Drive for Anyone
As the GStor Wave's hard disk performance is typical of the numerous external 2.5-inch models currently on the market, it all boils down to what you are looking for in terms of design and features. If you need extra connectivity like a FireWire port, then you're probably better off looking at other models. Conversely, if you're just looking for a simple no-frills and functional model, the market is currently saturated with such offerings.
With design and physical attractiveness becoming paramount in consumer choice and price becoming another important factor in the battle for the consumer dollar, it's no surprise that the GStor Wave looks poised to enter the market with guns fully loaded.
With five colors to choose from, namely silver, black, purple pink, blue, and apple green, users will definitely appreciate the variety that ExcelStor is offering compared to some of the standard colors and designs that its competitors have to show. Available in the second quarter of the year, the GStor Wave will be retailing at a competitive price of S$109 for the basic 160GB model. That's a pretty decent price if you ask us, so why not grab one for all your portable storage needs?
