For the 2017 edition, the Game Developers Conference (GDC) Expo was held in the North Hall and South Hall of the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The three-level Moscone West Hall was primarily reserved for summits, postmortems, conference tracks, as well as the Indie MEGABOOTH showcase, Train Jam, the 17th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards, and the 19th Annual Independent Games Festival Awards.
The Gran Turismo Sport demo at the PlayStation booth runs on PS4 Pro, complete with a racing pod and Logitech's G29 Driving Force racing wheel and floor pedals for good measure. As expected of Polyphony Digital, the series' signature hyper-realistic visuals are beautifully realized in this six-track demo, while the frame rate zooms along at what seems to be a constant 60 fps. We can't wait for the closed beta to begin on March 17.
Other notable demos at the PlayStation booth include Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Cosmic Star Heroine, EITR, GNOG, and Rain World.
PS VR sci-fi shooter Farpoint will be released on May 16 as a bundle with the PS VR Aim Controller. The color orb and motion sensor allow for 1:1 aiming, while the repositioned analog sticks, DualShock 4 controls, and built-in rumble lend well to the FPS genre.
Unity, the game engine behind Niantic's Pokémon GO and Playdead's INSIDE, showcased a wide selection of games at the GDC Expo, such as the recently-released Night in the Woods, and upcoming titles like Tokyo 42 and Yooka-Laylee.
Snipperclips, the co-op puzzler that launched alongside the Nintendo Switch, was originally developed in Adobe Flash, before it was eventually moved to the Unity engine.
Amazon may be a new player in the game engine market, but you wouldn't know it from its GDC presence. The game engine in question, Lumberyard, recently entered beta 1.8, while the potential of Amazon-owned Twitch and AWS integrations were available for interested developers and students to explore.
Cloud Canvas, which enables developers to implement cloud-connected features in as little as 30 minutes, was one of many live tutorial kiosks at the Lumberyard booth. In this instance, the procedural speech functionality can be integrated with Twitch's chat platform.
At the Malaysia Pavilion, some of the highlights from MDEC's #MYGameOn initiative include Streamline Studios (the very same studio with a hand in Final Fantasy XV and Street Fighter V, to name a few ), the latest development build of Ammobox Studios' FPS-RTS hybrid Eximius, Kurechii (the mobile developer behind Postknight and Tiny Guardians), and Weyrdworks (of Super Steampuff fame).
Complementing VR headsets is CaptoGlove, a Bluetooth-enabled wearable controller that converts hand and finger motions into in-game movements without the need for costly accessories. A Kickstarter campaign is expected in mid-March, where early backers can pledge US$160 for a single glove.
Qualcomm's VR experience tied in to the upcoming Power Rangers film, which helps demonstrate the inside-out room scale tracking capability of the Snapdragon 835 VR Developer Kit (VRDK) headset.
In addition to offering a sneak peek at the Unreal Engine VR Editor, Epic Games also showcased a plethora of UE4-powered games, including ARK: Survival Evolved, Blade II: The Return of the Evil, Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-, Lineage II: Revolution, and Snake Pass.
Powered by Tegra X1, the current incarnation of NVIDIA Shield streams PC games, 4K HDR videos, as well as does apps and voice search in one sleek package.
