Sony Xperia Z Redefines Elegance Once More
It's official: Sony has officially announced the existence of the Xperia Z on Malaysian soil.
First announced during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2012 in Las Vegas, the Xperia Z has won numerous awards from many different bodies and companies since then. Officially revealing the device was Ola Lilja Molén, Head of SEA Markets, Sony Mobile Communications.
The creation and existence of the Xperia Z, according to Molén, represents a shift in not just practicality, but also dynamics in Sony's approach towards making and turning a strategic focus area mobile. The result is a device with a great design, powerful camera technology, elegant screen, clear sound and unrivaled connectivity.
In lieu of the Xperia Z, Molén also announced that the Xperia ZL - a slightly shorter, more compact model without the water resistant and dustproof properties of the Xperia Z - will also be launching at the same time with its flagship phone.
After a few more words, Molén and Kikuo Okura, Sony Malaysia's Managing Director, were then welcomed on stage to reveal the Xperia Z by pulling them out of a tank of water in which they were submerged.
The Sony Xperia Z is a high-end smartphone which features a full HD, 1920x1080p 5-inch display that runs on the Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2. Its overall design is evoked from what Sony has described as an 'Omnibalance' design. Some of its other key features include:
- 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor
- 2GB RAM
- 13MP Fast Capture camera with Exmor RS for mobile, HDR video, Superior Auto and Noise Reduction to effortlessly capture razor sharp pictures and videos in any conditions
- Dust and water resistant (IP55 & IP57) with a durable glass display
- STAMINA battery mode improves standby time by at least 4 times
- LTE data capabilities
- One-touch connectivity with Near Field Communication (NFC)
- Android's 4.1 Jelly Bean operating System (upgradable to Android 4.2)
The Xperia ZL, as mentioned earlier, has the same hardware as the Xperia Z, but lacks the presence of the Dust and water resistant capabilities of its big brother. However, the Xperia ZL will have a dedicated shutter button as well as an Infrared (IR) port, making it the ideal phone for the more camera-oriented individuals.
But the surprises didn't end there either. After the unveiling of the Xperia Z, we were also given a preview of the all-new Sony Xperia Tablet Z. The tablet, which was first announced for Japan, will be Sony's latest high-end premium full HD, 1080p 10.1-inch LTE tablet which features the same stunning Omnibalance design as the Xperia Z smartphone. Weighing at only 495g and measuring at a width of only 6.9mm, it is both the lightest and thinnest tablet currently in existence, knocking out the former champion of both categories, the iPad mini, from its throne.
It possesses some of the same features found on the Xperia Z, which include the same dust and water resistant coating and STAMINA battery mode. Instead of a 13MP camera, the Xperia Tablet Z comes with an 8MP rear camera and a 2MP HD front-facing camera.
The Xperia Z and ZL smartphones will be officially available at authorized dealers by March 15, 2013. The Xperia Z will retail at RM2,199, while the Xperia ZL will retail at RM1,899.
No official price and date has been set for the Xperia Tablet Z, but word is that Sony's tablet will only be hitting the hands of consumers as late as May this year.
