Sony PlayStation 4 is Official, Set for Holiday 2013

It's official, Sony Computer Entertainment has announced its next-generation console – the PlayStation 4 – for a Holiday 2013 launch. Although the actual gaming console wasn't shown at the 'See the Future' event in New York today, the innovative DualShock 4 Wireless Controller were unveiled alongside the newly-developed PlayStation 4 Eye camera.

Designed from the ground up, the PS4 aims to redefine rich, immersive gameplay with high-performance hardware, smart personalization, plus integrated social capabilities and second-screen features. The custom chip behind the PS4 contains eight x86-64 cores and a state-of-the-art GPU that generates 1.84 Teraflops of processing power. The console further boasts 8GB of GDDR5 memory, which enables the PS4 to radically reduce lag time between players and their content.

Need to take a breather? Suspend mode keeps the PS4 in a low power state while preserving the game session. When you're ready to play, just hit the Power button and you'll be back at the exact point in the game where you left off.

Meanwhile, a secondary custom chip handles background processing, where games can be downloaded or updated in the background or during standby. Digital titles, on the other hand, will be playable almost immediately as the PS4 downloads a fraction of the data at the start, while the rest is downloaded in the background during gameplay.

Similar to the leaked prototype photo, the official DualShock 4 Wireless Controller has a front touch pad, with a new Options button to replace the traditional Select and Start buttons. In addition to a built-in speaker, the DualShock 4 also comes with a Share button to broadcast gameplay in real-time via livestream services such as uStream.

Improving on all aspects of the existing DualShock 3 Wireless Controller, the DualShock 4 incorporates many innovations to deliver new gameplay and interactive possibilities on the PlayStation 4. Besides sporting an improved six-axis sensor, the controller has a touch pad on the front that is reminiscent of PS Vita's rear touch pad. Of note is the 'Share' button, which allows players to scan through their recent most gameplay for easy video upload to Facebook or other social networking services. A Mono Headset will be bundled with the PS4, allowing gamers to chat with other online players, while also hearing the sound effects from the DualShock 4 controller.

The LED light bar on the DualShock 4 is meant to identify players and deliver gameplay feedback to gamers through changes in color patterns. There is also a stereo headset jack for voice chat.

The PlayStation 4 eye camera is equipped with two high-sensitive cameras with wide-angle lenses and four microphones to pick up on players' position and voice commands. It also supports face recognition, allowing players to login to their PS4.

The PlayStation Store, when combined with Gaikai's cloud technology, will enable gamers to sample a portion of an actual game before purchase.

The acquisition of Gaikai's cloud technology is set to bring additional value to PlayStation Network users, while existing services such as Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited will continue to be offered on the PS4's PlayStation Store. Despite the lack of native PS3 backward compatibility, SCE is exploring the possibilities of making PS3 titles playable on PS4 in the near future.

PS4 second-screen approach include 'Remote Play' to seamlessly beam PS4 titles to the PS Vita over Wi-Fi.

Smartphones and tablets based on iOS and Android will also benefit from becoming second screens via the PlayStation App.

The newly-designed PS4 menu screen allows players to check out recommended content, view friends' gameplay progress, and more. SCE is looking to reduce download times by predicting players' future purchases and downloading them onto the PS4 before they even click the Buy button.

The upcoming lineup of PS4 games that were shown include:

  • Driveclub (WWS Evolution Studios)
  • inFAMOUS Second Son (WWS Sucker Punch Productions)
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall (WWS Guerrilla Games)
  • Knack (WWS Japan Studio)
  • Deep Down (working title) (CAPCOM)
  • Destiny (Activision Publishing, Inc./ Bungie, Inc.)
  • Diablo III (Blizzard Entertainment, Inc.)
  • The Witness (Jonathan Blow)
  • Watch_Dogs (Ubisoft Entertainment)

More title will be announced between now and the Holiday 2013 launch.
