Sony Launches Full Frame Trio and NEX Cameras
Just last weekend at the Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival, Sony launched three new full frame digital imaging devices along with two new NEX mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. During the launch, Sony invited Kikuo Okura, Managing Director of Sony Malaysia to initiate the launch while photographer Gary Friedman of The Friedman Archives was also present to give a short demonstration.
The three new full frame options that were launched include their flagship, the α99, a full frame compact camera, Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 and even the world’s first 35mm Interchangeable Lens Full-Frame Handycam, the Handycam NEX-VG900E. These three great devices come packed with Sony’s Exmor CMOS sensors that boast an effective resolution of 24.3 megapixels.
The newly launched Sony α99 will now be the flagship A-mount camera for Sony. Offering Sony’s Translucent Mirror technology, the unit will be able to offer unprecedented levels of auto-focusing with no less than 102 AF points thanks to the combination of its 19-point AF system with 11 cross sensors and a multi-point focal plane phase-detection AF sensor.
Catering to different segments of the market, the RX-1 is targeted at enthusiast photographers looking for a secondary camera which is both, compact and capable of producing stunning images when required. The Handycam NEX-VG900E on the other hand is great for videographers looking to diversify their footage because not only will the full frame sensor yield higher quality videos but the ability to change lenses will give videographers even more options for creativity.
In conjunction with the launch of Sony’s full frame options, they also added two new cameras to their NEX line of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras - the NEX-5R and NEX 6. The Sony NEX-5R offers a picture quality similar to DSLRs without the extra weight. Offering a 16.1 MP sensor, the unit also comes with integrated Wi-Fi capabilities for easy image sharing, saving and viewing. The NEX 6 is targeted at committed DSLR users who need to travel light without compromising picture quality. The unit also offers a full sized hot-shoe which is compatible with full-sized flashes.
