Rugged New Pentax WG-3 GPS Camera Charges Wirelessly

The WG3 cameras have six distinctive LED lights around the lens for macro shooting.

Pentax has announced the latest versions of their distinctive looking rugged digital compacts; the WG-3, WG-3 GPS and the WG-10. The WG-3 and the WG-3 GPS are similar cameras with two differences; for one the WG-3 GPS is compatible with the wireless Qi (inductive power standard) recharging system, place the camera on a Qi-compatible wireless charger and the camera battery recharges automatically. No need to either pop the battery cover or for wires! As you can guess, the WG-3 GPS also comes with a built-in GPS while the WG-3 does not.

Both cameras come with a 16MP CMOS sensor, a relatively fast f/2.0-4.9 lens with a 4x optical zoom lens which has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 25-100mm. Both are waterproof to 45 feet or approx. 13.7 meters, drop-resistant from heights of 6.6 feet or approx. 2 meters, dust-proof, can withstand cold temperatures of down to 14F or -10C and crush-proof up to 220 foot pounds of force. The WG-3 GPS has a built-in clock that can also measure pressure, altitude, depth and compass direction.

The WG-3 will retail at US$300 and the WG-3 GPS for US$350 in March.

The WG-10 is the more affordable entry-level model.

The other new announcement, the WG-10, is an entry-level camera for the budget conscious. It's waterproof down to 33 feet or approx. 10 meters, shockproof to drops from 4.9 feet or approx. 1.49 meters, dust-proof, cold-proof down to 14F or -10C and crush-proof up to 200 foot pounds of force. The camera has a 14MP CMOS sensor with a 5x optical zoom lens offering the 35mm equivalent focal length of 28-140mm.

The WG-10 will retail for US$179.95 in mid-April.
