Qualcomm: Snapdragon is a platform, not just a processor
For many years, the tech industry has always referred to Qualcomm's Snapdragon products as processors or chipsets. Moving forward, Qualcomm wants you to refer to Snapdragon as a 'platform' instead of a processor.
The refinining of the Snapdragon terminology is part of the several changes and updates to Qualcomm's product brand positioning over the next several months. Qualcomm believes the word 'processor' is not adequate in representing what the technology actually is, and the solutions that its employees have worked on.
Qualcomm - In truth, Snapdragon is more than a single component, a piece of silicon, or what many would misinterpret as the CPU; it’s an anthology of technology, comprising hardware, software, and services that are not fully captured in a word like “processor.” That is why Qualcomm Technologies is refining our terminology by referring to Snapdragon as a “platform” instead of a processor.
Qualcomm also states that only premium mobile platforms will retain the Snapdragon brand while the processors in the 200 tier will be classified under the new Qualcomm Mobile name. In doing so, the company believes it will help differentiate entry-level and high-volume solutions from its flagship and high-end Snapdragon premium mobile experience. This in turn will provide better clarity and expectations for consumers.
