Polaroid to Debut Android-based Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera at CES 2013

Is this the world's first Android-based mirrorless camera? <br>Image source: Photo Rumors

Update (Dec 21, 2012): In an email to Imaging Resource, Scott Hardy, president and CEO of Polaroid, has confirmed that "there will be an Android powered, interchangeable lens camera introduced by Polaroid at CES 2013". But he stopped short (naturally) of saying if the leaked IM1836 is that camera.

Android-based compact digital cameras aren’t really news, as we’ve already seen a few from the likes of Samsung, Nikon, and Polaroid. However, rumors are rife that Polaroid is going to announce the world’s first Android-based, mirrorless interchangeable lens camera.

According to Photo Rumors, a fairly detailed description of this camera, IM1836, can be found in the Dealerscope magazine. According to the article, the IM1836 is a collaboration between Polaroid and Sakar International, a consumer electronics and accessories manufacturer. The camera is supposedly powered by Android 4.0, has an 18.1-megapixel sensor, and features a 3.5-inch touchscreen, a pop-up flash, built-in Wi-Fi support, as well as headphone and HDMI outputs. And in its latest post, Photo Rumors has another image of this camera that was first leaked on a Russian website. It seems like the IM1836 uses microSD cards and will have at least two zoom lenses, 10-30mm and 30-110mm.

Photo Rumors was quick to point out that the IM1836 looks very much like the Nikon 1 J2 mirrorless camera. From the front, the similarities are indeed uncanny. However, the IM1836’s rear looks nothing like the Nikon camera. For one, the IM1836 has a 3.5-inch display, whereas the J2 has a 3.0-inch screen. The former also has much fewer physical controls, which suggests that most of the operations are carried out using the touchscreen. Interestingly though, the Nikon 1 system has 10-30mm and 30-110mm lenses as well.
