Olympus: O-M-G, it’s the OM-D

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – After seeing a string of rumors online, Olympus has finally unveiled its new camera system, the OM-D, with the launch of the E-M5 Micro Four-Thirds offering.

Designed to mimic the look and feel of its previously-successful OM-1 camera, Olympus hopes this new series will be poised to take a bigger chunk of the market share.

According to Tan Tick Boon, Managing Director of Olympus (Malaysia) he explained that, “With this new camera, we foresee demand for our Micro Four-Third system continue to increase. This is based on research done by Gfk, NPD, BCN: since mirrorless cameras were launched, the trend has been increasing tremendously especially in countries like Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong.”

Unlike Olympus’ PEN series, the new OM-D E-M5 has a built-in EVF with 1.44-million dots and a 100% field of view coverage, allowing you to compose images with more accuracy.

Running on a 16MP Live MOS sensor, the camera also boasts the world’s fastest AF system on a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera system, along with the world’s first five-axis image stabilization system.

To accompany its weatherproof body, Olympus also announced a host of new lenses and accessories, including a unique two-piece battery grip.

This new camera system will hit the Malaysian market by end March 2012 but for now, we are left again in anticipation as even the price will be announced at a later date.

In conjunction with the launch, Olympus also unveiled ten new compact cameras, which are a part of its Tough, Traveler and Smart series including the TG-820, TG-620, TG-320, SZ-31MR, SZ-14, VR-350, VR-510, VH-210, VG-170 and VG-150.
