New Nikon 1 and COOLPIX Cameras Spotted at CES 2013

New Nikon 1 and COOLPIX Cameras Spotted at CES 2013

With CES 2013 in full swing, it’s no surprise that many tech and consumer electronics companies are announcing their upcoming products at the same time. Not intending to miss all the furore, Nikon has announced two additions to their Nikon 1 series cameras and another two additions to their COOLPIX series as well.

Nikon 1 J3 and S1

In a surprising move, Nikon has released an update to their Nikon 1 J2 model even though the J2 was only announced in August 2012. The J3’s main point of interest would be the increase in the high-speed continuous shooting department. While the J2 boasts of a 10fps continuous shooting with AF tracking, the J3 beats it with an additional 5 frames to bring the total to a 15fps for continuous shooting.

The Nikon 1 S1 is a new line in the Nikon 1 series, which features intuitive operation in a digital camera with interchangeable lenses. The Nikon 1 S1 features a user interface that is even simpler than the ones found in the rest of the Nikon 1 cameras, but retains the same performance and functions as its Nikon 1 brethren. While the S1 may look similar to the J3 at a passing glance, the S1 simplifies its operation by excluding a mode dial, making it handle more like a digital compact camera. The S1 is also capable of shooting continuously at 15fps.

Both cameras sport other new features such as the Slow View function. When the function is enabled, the camera will focus when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. The camera then starts buffering images and then playing them back in a continuous 5x slow motion loop in the camera monitor. So when the user spots a frame he likes, pressing down the shutter-release button fully will capture that frame, which makes this function useful for fast-moving objects.

Both cameras are equipped with the EXPEED 3A image-processing engine, which is optimized exclusively for Nikon 1 cameras. The engine is capable of fast image processing, which suits the high-speed shooting capabilities of the Nikon 1 series cameras.

The J3 features an effective pixel count of 14.2-megapixels, while the S1 has an effective pixel count of 10.1-megapixels. The J3 will come in silver, red, white, black and beige. The S1 will come in black, pink, red, white and khaki. The pricing and availability of both cameras will be confirmed at a later date.

COOLPIX S6500 and S2700

Besides announcing two new models for the Nikon 1 series, there are also two new additions to the COOLPIX series. Availability and pricing for both models will be announced at a later date.

The S6500 comes with a 12x optical zoom, from 25mm to 300mm (35mm equivalent). It is also equipped with a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor. And in line with the more recent digital compact camera releases across the board, the S6500 also sports built-in Wi-Fi , so users can transfer images and movies to smartphones and tablets. The S6500 is also capable of full HD 30fps video recording with stereo sound.

An entry-level digital compact, the S2700 features a 6x optical zoom, with a focal range of 26mm to 156mm (35mm equivalent). With its Scene Auto Selector mode and Target Finding AF, which automatically selects and focuses on the AF area according to subject movement, the S2700 will be simple to operate and use even for those who have never used a digital camera before. The S2700 will be available in silver, red, black and purple. There will also be an additional two color schemes for the S2700 that feature flower motifs, decorative pink and decorative purple.
