GPU R&D Center Established in Malaysia

From L-R: Thillai Raj, Chief Technology Officer, MIMOS Berhad; Thiyagu Letchumanan, Country Manager, Commercial and Public Sector, HP Enterprise Group, Hewlett Packard Malaysia; and Eric Chang, Manager, Sales & Solution Architect, NVIDIA Southeast Asia & Taiwan, Professional Solutions Group, officiating the GPU R&D and Compute-Solution Center

Update (December 19, 2012): Added video interview with TriAset Sdn Bhd

Earlier this year, we spoke to Thillai Raj, MIMOS' Chief Technology Officer about the current state of high-performance computing in Malaysia. After many months of meetings and discussions, NVIDIA, HP and MIMOS have banded together to create the first Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) R&D and Compute-Solution Center here in Malaysia. Established with the aim to develop new GPU technology to help in the advancement of HPC (High Performance Computing), or supercomputing, the center is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.

A brief tour of the center was given just after the launch earlier today.

The launch of this center was held at MIMOS’ premises earlier today, and saw the attendance of Thiyagu Letchumanan, Country Manager, Commercial and Public Sector, HP Enterprise Group, Hewlett Packard Malaysia; Thillai Raj, and Eric Chang, Manager, Sales & Solution Architect, NVIDIA Southeast Asia & Taiwan, Professional Solutions Group.

We met up with NVIDIA's Chief Solution Architect Dr. Simon See, who gave us an overview of NVIDIA's GPU computing solutions, including the work that went into its GPGPU acceleration technology, from CUDA 5.0 to parallel computing.

In addition to research and development activities, the center will serve as a one-stop source to promote, share, and educate on GPU technologies and solutions to customers and those interested in General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPUs), as well as to perform collaborative work on GPU-related topics.

Planned local activities include collaborative efforts with universities, creating CUDA teaching centers, hosting GPGPU workshops, and hosting government and industry visits. It will also focus on developing GPU accelerator libraries, GPGPU algorithms, and GPGPU application benchmark and testing.

As the hardware partner, HP is providing the entire infrastructure for the center, making use of HP ProLiant Servers, HP Networking switches and HP 3PAR Storage.

We caught up with Dennis Ang, HP's Asia Pacific and Japan Business Developer Director of HPC during the opening of the GPU R&D and Compute Solution Center at MIMOS Berhad to discuss the state of GPGPU computing and the partnership between NVIDIA and HP.

We also talked to TriAset CEO William Lim about the benefits of using NVIDIA GPUs and CUDA technology for Computational Finance, especially when it comes to options pricing, risk analysis, and algorithmic trading.

MIMOS is currently utilizing the center for research and development in big data processing in the area of text processing, financial computation, and data scrambling.
