Apple Acquires WiFiSlam, Preps for Indoor Mapping on iOS Maps
According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple has just acquired WiFiSlam, a startup that specializes in Wi-Fi-assisted indoor-GPS tracking, for approximately US$20 million. This takeover might mean that we’ll soon see indoor mapping on iOS maps.
Interestingly enough, it seems that WiFiSlam was actually started by a few ex-Google employees a couple of years ago and even one of their financial investors is still working at Google. While it may not be clear what Apple plans to do with this technology, it has already been confirmed that all WiFiSlam-related apps on Google Play have been removed.
We managed to find an old video of Joseph Huang from WiFiSlam presenting at the GeoMeetup on August 23 last year. Do watch it and tell us what you think Apple is going to do with this technology.
