RIM Settles on Screen Resolution for BlackBerry 10 Devices

Research in Motion (RIM) seems to be going all out to woo developers with its latest move to standardize the screen resolution for devices running on the upcoming BlackBerry 10 (BB10) devices. 

According to the BlackBerry Developer Blog, RIM received quite a number of feedback from the BlackBerry developer community on how changes in screen resolution will affect app development. The company decided to make the app development process much easier by confirming the screen resolutions for its upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices: 

• Full touch devices: 1280 x 720 pixels (16:9)
• Keyboard devices: 720 x 720 pixels (1:1)

In addition, RIM also offers two options for developers who are testing apps on the BB10 Dev Alpha devices which come with a display resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels. The first option is to modify the app according to the two standardized screen resolutions.  The second option involves "letter boxing" the app to 1280 x 720 pixels on the first BB10 device, leaving 24 pixels on both sides of the screen.

The standardized screen resolutions coincide with what we have seen in a leaked presentation slide obtained by N4BB in June. The L-series device is stated to have a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels (356ppi), while the N-series QWERTY device will sport a display resolution of 720 x 720 pixels (330ppi).

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins also confirmed in an exclusive Q & A session that the first BB10 device will sport a full-touch user interface and will be launched in January 2013. It will be followed closely by a QWERTY device.
