Ratio of PCs Sold Over Macs Sold Narrowing Down

While Apple might be swimming in hoards of cash, it wasn't so long ago that the company was close to death. From the mid to late 90s, Apple was a waning force - as the chart clearly shows. However, thanks to the iPod, a revamp of the Mac OS, and later the iPhone and iPad, Apple has now become a force to be reckoned with.
According to analyst Horace Dediu of Asymco, Macs are enjoying a resurgence as the ratio of PCs to Macs sold is gradually falling. Mac sales are nothing to shout about and truth be told, Macs are no longer Apple's primary source of business - it is iOS devices such as the iPhone and iPad. If you take the iPhone and iPad into account, the ratio falls even further to less than 6x. This is critical because it reveals that the Windows operating system and Microsoft are no longer the hegemony it once was. Furthermore, apart from Apple, Microsoft has also got to contend with Google's fast growing, if fragmented, Android operating system.
Therefore, the significance of the new Windows 8 and Windows RT operating system cannot be underestimated. However, if early signs are anything to go by, Windows 8 could be Microsoft's best OS yet.
