Enhanced Dolby Digital Plus Technology Heading to Mobile Devices

Limited space on tablets does not permit for larger speakers. And with smaller drivers, the general audio quality on tablets and many mobile devices are usually described as "tinny, scratchy, or feeble". Not that they can help it, but this is an impediment manufacturers worldwide have to workaround most of the time. Thankfully, Dolby seems to understand this sonic limitation. According to Engadget's report, Dolby has plans to bring an improved version of its Digital Plus technology to tablets and other mobile devices. Their purpose? To enhance the audio quality as well as audibility of movie dialog on these gizmos. It isn't really a problem when you're plugged in with a decent pair of headset. But when you have to put up with tiny speakers on a tablet, it can be quite a challenge just to make out what the movie characters are saying in most instances.

As things stand, Dolby's surround sound technology is compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8, and Android. However, the software needs to be specially tuned for different devices, so it's actually up to OEMs to license the technology. In other words, it's unlikely you'd find a universal app which you can download anytime soon. A Dolby representative has indicated that the mobile version of Dolby Digital Plus should appear "within the coming months". They've used an older release of the Samsung GALAXY Tab with Dolby's audio software installed. The user interface isn't final by the way.
