Cisco Projects Global Mobile Internet Data to Increase 16 Fold by 2012
The Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast for 2012 to 2016 predicts that the world wide mobile data traffic will increase by 18 fold over the next five years, reaching up to 10.8 exabytes per month. This sharp increase in mobile traffic is caused partly by an increasing number of mobile Internet connected devices that will exceed the number of people on Earth (the United Nations estimates that the population would increase to 7.3 billion by 2016).
Increasing amount of mobile traffic are caused by a number of trends, which include the increase in streamed content, mobile connections, faster mobile speeds, more mobile video and enhanced computing devices.
Cisco also projects that by 2016, 71 percent of smartphones and tablets (1.6 billion) will be connected online to an Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) mobile network. From a larger perspective, 39 percent of all global mobile devices (more than 4 billion) could be IPv6 capable. This may then impact the sales of mobile devices to increase, with service providers finding ways to offload mobile traffic to fixed networks.
