What Do You Think Makes a ThinkPad?
Ever wondered what makes a ThinkPad tick? Well, in conjunction with Lenovo’s ThinkPad 20th anniversary, Steven Cheng, a specialist when it comes to the ThinkPad series of products, tears down Lenovo’s latest ThinkPad T430 notebook to give us an intimate look at what really goes on under its dark, brooding demeanor. Famed for their immense performance, durable chassis, as well as their security features, here are some of the structural components that set the ThinkPad series above the rest.
Top Cover
Boasting durability, the top cover is crafted from a hybrid material combining the strength of carbon fiber as the main component, while seamlessly adding glass fiber around the edges to increase the performance of the wireless adapter.
Roll-cage
Inside the main part of the notebook, Lenovo installs a magnesium alloy roll-cage, which protects the main components from drop damage and also prevents the components from being tempered with due to involuntary chassis flex, which is prevalent with keyboards that are made of softer material. Thanks to this structure, Lenovo also managed to increase the drop height to 1.6m.
Keyboard Design
The newer ThinkPad keyboards now employ scissor-switch style keys so you can say goodbye to the mushy, unresponsive keyboards of old. Boasting spill resistant capabilities, selected keyboards also come with LED backlight, making them work favorably under dim lighting conditions too.
Cooling Technology
With a new owl blade design, the vanes on the fans are built to move more air while reducing the operating noise, resulting in cooler temperatures and even lower dB levels. In addition to this, the coolers also come with two outlets for dissipating heat more efficiently.
Miscellaneous
Engineered for long term usage, the ThinkPad notebook hinges are tested up to 30,000 cycles, which will last users for up to 10 years of continuous usage. Working with Microsoft, Lenovo also offers the Enhanced Experience 3 suite with their new ThinkPad notebooks, which lets the notebooks boot up 40 percent faster than usual. Also with the Bootshield software, the start-up times will not deteriorate greatly over time.
