WWDC 2012 Announcements Roundup
There were rumors aplenty before today about what Apple would unveil during its keynote address on the first day of WWDC 2012. Well, there were as many hits as there were misses. While we didn’t see the mythical Apple HDTV or the much-rumored iPad mini, there are still plenty of new products to keep tech pundits and consumers alike excited.
On the Mac front, the MacBook Airs have all upgraded to Intel’s Ivy Bridge platform, and now boost support for USB 3.0 (finally!). The MacBook Pro lineup also sees a total refresh, with even faster Ivy Bridge processors, as well as NVIDIA’s GeForce GT 650M discrete graphics available on a couple of them.
Of course, the highlight of the keynote has to be the new 15-inch, Retina display-equipped MacBook Pro, which sports a staggering resolution of 2880 x 1800 pixels (this translates to a pixel density of 220 pixels per inch). Designed from the ground up, this is Apple telling the world what it thinks is the future of notebooks. And by the way, Apple has quietly discontinued the 17-inch MacBook Pro.
While many professionals will appreciate the raw computing power and the super-high-res screen that the new MacBook Pro brings, there are also many who are disappointed that the Mac Pro isn’t upgraded in a big way.
On the software side of things, OS X Mountain Lion will ship next month on the Mac App Store for just US$20. If you were to buy any of the new Macs announced today, you’re entitled to a free upgrade. The next 'big cat' from Apple touts over 200 new features, such as Notification Center, Messages, Dictation, Safari 6, Game Center, and Power Nap.
The other big announcement is iOS 6. True to many rumors, it includes a new Maps app (with 3D maps), VIP mail, deep Facebook integration, and many improvements for Siri. And now, Siri is coming to the 3rd generation iPad. Of course, these are just a few of the 200 new features in Apple’s next mobile OS.

iOS 6, Apple's latest mobile operating system has arrived with over 200 new features. We take a look at the new Facebook integration, the various enhancements in Photo Stream, Mail, and Safari, as well as the new Privacy controls. A closer look at the iOS 6 has revealed how some of the more exciting features will be left out on certain iOS devices. No official announcements were made about the AirPort Express during Apple's WWDC 2012. However, the Cupertino firm did slip in a surreptitious update on the compact wireless router after all. This long-overdue hardware update may bring little joy as these desktops still offer USB 2.0 and FireWire 800 connections, while support for Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 are currrently absent. Besides highlighting the new iOS 6 features, Apple also launched a new Smart Case for the iPad, which has a polyurethane back that snaps in place over the tablet itself. More features are said to come to iOS 6, including OS X Mountain Lion - Notification Center ‘Do Not Disturb’ toggle, Safari iCloud Tabs, and Mail VIPs - and extended iCloud support.
