No DSLR? No Problem! Just Light Away for Better-Looking Images

There is a misconception going around town that you need to have a DSLR in order to get clean, quality photographs. Although a DSLR certainly makes it easier to achieve great images, it is by no means the last word at having great image quality. In actual fact, one would be able to capture great images just by using a cellphone camera and a continuous light source, creating additional light wherever you need it or sculpting shapes out of your subject.

Using the sun for example, you can get better images just by placing your subjects 45-degree towards the free light source in the sky. If you're indoors, why not place them under spot lighting? Of course, your flash is definitely going to help in this situations, but if you're taking pictures of delicious food in a dark restaurant, the chances are that that blast of light is going to overpower everything in plain sight. What do you do then? Instagram it?

If you're a techie at heart, you would definitely have an image quality booster with you in the form of a tablet or a smartphone. Let's say for instance, the restaurant's too dim for your special low-light camera and you've got a touch screen device. You can actually use any torchlight app to turn your device into a light source, think of it as a mini studio light. Things will definitely look brighter if you have a tablet, as the larger screen makes it easier to light larger objects, such as a person's face or to add to the ambient light.

See the difference with having a secondary light source now? Now, if you don't have a tablet, don't fret as that secondary light source can be anything from an LED light strip to a full-blown fluorescent light bulb. Add more light sources, and you'll have a mini portable studio of your own that fits into your backpacks and pockets, ready to be pulled out at moment's notice in order to cater to changing lighting requirements. Remember the argument where you don't have to use a DSLR to get great photos such as these, only added light? The images you see here are all taken using the Samsung GALAXY Nexus' 5-megapixel camera, save for the first one of course, and if your pictures are all going to appear on Facebook and on your blog, need we say more?
